On February 27th 2010, glaziers from Local Union 1778 participated in Gift of Glass, a charity function geared toward helping elderly home owners who are still in need after Hurricane Ike. The program which was created in the 80's has not been active in quite some time. Under the coordination of Denise Lewis from Spring Glass and the help of both union and non-union glass companies, the event went off with much success. Binswanger Glass generously provided trucks as well as materials to accompany the glaziers who volunteered their time for this worthwhile event. In all, LU 1778 had 13 glaziers in 5 rack trucks hitting the streets to repair windows in fixed income households across the bay area. When the work orders ran out, the glaziers from Local 1778 rallied in one neighborhood and began going door to door in hopes of finding recipients missed by initial efforts. In all, they were able to fix more than fifty windows in close to eleven homes after the event was scheduled to close. Vice President Mike Farley was quoted as saying, "If we have the glass on the truck, we should do all we can with it." It is this sort of generosity that shows the residents of Harris County that Glaziers' Local 1778 is concerned with their well-being. Another event similar to this one is being put together for late summer, and the plan is to do it two times a year. We should all applaud the generous efforts of these glaziers-Keith Carberry, Mike Farley, Patrick Wagner, Eric Porter, Chuck Sims, Jason Porter, Brian Davila, Josh Sierra, Ray Gutierrez, Adam Archie, Mike Bouck, and David Poncio. It is their pay-it-forward attitude that is a testament to the union movement.
